Kretz Lumber Company, a vertically integrated hardwood lumber manufacturer based in Antigo, Wisconsin, has earned Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program.  This certification will open up a new supply of hardwood veneer logs, lumber, dimensional products, interior millwork, and butcher blocks from responsibly managed forests to help meet the growing demand of green building projects throughout the United States.

“We are focused on expanding our commitment to excellence to include promoting our history of long-term planning and dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable forest management,” said Kretz general manager Allen Quinney.

Kretz Lumber Co. has won the National Hardwood Lumber Association’s Forest Stewardship Award, the Wisconsin Business Friend of the Environment Award, and has been acknowledged by Ruffed Grouse Society, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Raptor Education Group for its’ role in managing healthy forest while promoting wildlife.

“We have been recognized both nationally and regionally for our forest stewardship, and feel that FSC certification is the next step in creating a program that insures sustainable use, as well as encourages the long-term health of the forests,” Quinney added.

The FSC is the global standard-setter in responsible forest management.  Chain-of-Custody certification guarantees that wood that comes from certified, responsibly managed forestlands is tracked throughout the supply chain, from the forest to the consumer.  Conscientious consumers can look for the FSC logo on wood products to know they are supporting forest management that protects biodiversity and supports local communities.

Kretz Lumber Co. produces 15 million board feet annually at its’ two hardwood sawmills.  The company kiln dries over 12 million feet annually; and operates a 30,000 sq. ft. dimension facility that manufactures edge-glued panels, dimensioned lumber, flooring, paneling, interior millwork, butcher block and finger-joint.  The company also owns and operates a full service distribution and retail facility in northern California named Hughes Hardwoods of Sacramento.  Kretz manages over 10,000 acres of company land, as well as thousands of acres of privately-owned timberland.  Kretz offers customized forest management plans, offers a Forest Family Management Program, and holds an annual Forestry Field Day which teaches landowners about sustainable forest management practices.
