Meet the Forester: Cory Howes

Q: What made you want to become a forester?
I have always been interested in environmental sustainability. I wanted to work in a field where I contributed to improving the health of the landscape.

Q: When did you start working at Kretz Lumber Company? What is one aspect of your job you really like?
June 2022. I enjoy working with private forest landowners and seeing the variety of camps and forested parcels across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It’s fun to help landowners implement their goals and objectives, and make a positive impact to the land they cherish.

Q: What is a common question you often receive from landowners? How do you answer it?
How do I know my wood won’t be stolen?

There are lots of checks and balances that help us track every load of wood moved from a property, but the main thing is that we only work with loggers and truck drivers that are reputable and have a proven track record of connecting excellent work in the woods.

Q: What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of work?
Wood turning, river fishing, canoeing, hunting, running, and hanging out with my two kids and wife.
